During my first of many visits to Madrid, I was told that the two most famous dishes to try were ‘Gambas al Ajillo’ (Spanish Garlic Shrimps) and ‘Bocadilla de Calamares’ (Squid Sandwich). I sourced both of these cuisines in a small tapas restaurant near the main square – Plaza Mayor – La Casa Del Abuelo.
First, the garlic shrimps – still to this day, one of the most amazing foods I have ever eaten – the shrimps come out of the kitchen bubbling hot in butter and olive oil, which has sauteed garlic and soft juicy shrimps thrown together and served straight to your table in a piping hot clay dish.
Second, the squid sandwich – a sandwich with a twist. Squid or calamari is something that I have always had served as it’s own tapas dish with an aioli dip, so having those two things combined and served inside freshly baked warm baguettes. I was pleasantly surprised how tasty this sandwich was but extremely filling! The squid was so crispy and so fresh and the aioli was even better as a sandwich condiment rather than a dip! Definitely recommend!
